Tales of the Abyss is an anime based on a video game (which I have not played) in a medieval-like setting full of swords, magic, monsters, etc...
The story focuses on Luke, a Duke's son of one country in and out of war with another across a fictional continent on the world made of "fonon" particles called Aulderant. The world has an allegedly preordained beginning and doom fortold in a book called the Scores...songs of incantation or spells that have an assortment of magical properties.
The layout of the world and roles of the Fonons are a bit complicated, and the religious/military order of the Lorelei are also a key force at work as supposed protectors of the Score's interpretation.
As the series progresses, there is a gradual dynamism in the main characters -especially with the relationship between Luke and Tear. A refreshingly sensible pace of maturation can be observed with a satisfying conclusion.
The opening song is decent and the ending theme has a beauty to it as well. The animation style is very crisp and consistent throughout.
If you love medieval/fantasy type series, this is a good one with a fair amount of cute animals, ferocious monsters, and comedy to go with the rather sobering subjects of religious fatalism, free will, and personal responsibility--especially in a time of war.
